Less is More

If our students gather any wisdom from what we teach here at Balanced Bodies, I hope they understand that our intention here is less is more. The majority of people are overstimulated, overstressed, and overworked. The philosophy of what we do here – in the massage room, in Yoga, in Jiu Jitsu, on and off the mat – is that when we exert less, we get more out of our experience.

Sitting is the New Smoking

Sitting has been deemed the new smoking.

That may seem like a heavy accusation but let’s address where we currently are. Modern society encourages inactivity, and sitting for extended periods of time. We are sedentary, of course not evolutionary, just socially. We sit to eat, poop, work, drive, travel...and even exercise...I’m talking to you, cyclists. Sitting is not only linked to chronic disease but it wreaks havoc on your spine. Raise your hand if you work at a computer! That’s what I thought. We can clearly see that there is an imbalance here.

Top 10 Questions About Massage Etiquette

From stripping to tipping and “oh no, what if I snore?” your first massage may make you feel a little uncomfortable or even embarrassed but do not worry. We have all the answers to your un asked questions here. These are my top 10 most asked questions and concerns when it comes to getting a massage.

  1. What do I wear?

The guideline that our therapists give clients is “Undress to your comfort level”. That being said, every so often when the therapist re-enters the room the client is still completely dressed because they didn’t want to offend the therapist. Heads up, we have seen it all and rarely get offended. Massage works best on bare skin so the less clothes the better. We have secret ninja ways of draping, or covering, clients so nothing embarrassing is exposed. I often let new clients know that they can leave their bottoms on if we are only working up top but to get comfortable. For me comfort typically means no pants. Underwear on or off is another option for modestly, however, if you are suffering from glute, hip, or low back pain, the glutes need to be addressed and bare glutes are best. Again, we always make sure you are covered and don’t feel exposed in anyway.

Why Warm-Ups are Important in BJJ

We know, you're an experienced grappler and you like to roll a lot. You think warm ups are stupid because instead of running around the mat you would rather be drilling live or rolling, right?

Wrong. Muscle activation is a real thing, that helps in many ways to strengthen and correct muscular imbalances. But wait, you want to roll forever right? Longevity is as much of an art as the pajama scramble, and it only comes to those who take the extra time to ensure it.

Back injuries are the most common problem in our sport, caused by poor posture during the day, and the absence of the proper muscles doing their share of the work. Our posture in jiu jitsu can compound this problem, especially if your dominantly a guard player or love the berimbolo or rubber guard or just get stacked a lot.

Legs Up The Wall Pose

Legs up the wall pose as we call it in Yoga land is a restorative yoga posture that not only allows the mind and the body to relax but its stress and tension relieving benefits can affect you more than you might think. It is a very simple yoga poses, so simple even my dad does it, because it doesn’t require much flexibility or strength. The hard work here is honestly just being still and silent long enough to let this inversion work it’s magic.

The purpose of this pose is to invert the body in the safest and easiest ways to elicit a relaxation effect on the body. When the body is relaxed the mind can relax and stress and anxiety can decrease significantly. Slow and controlled breathing can help to lower the heart rate which is typically higher in those who suffer from stress.

Overwhelmed by Stress?

I am a massage therapist and Yoga teacher.

Many of my friends and clients assume that because of my line of work and my interests that I don’t really suffer from stress.

That couldn’t be more wrong.

I am a busy body.

I struggle with sitting still, patience, saying no, and balance. When I say “balance” I mean all things balance. Sleep/work, Food/sweets, Money/time. I really have to work on these things consistently and patiently. Patience, also a struggle. Realizing I am a busy body has led me on my journey to a balanced body.

This Too Shall Pass

Do you ever wish you were somewhere else? Someone else?

Like you have lost who you are and you have no idea why things aren't the way they should be, and the only way to find that is to completely change everything about your life?

Well, we all do and no matter how hard you try, you are still you.

What if I told you there is ONLY ONE THING you had to do to change your life?

I have been in the healing industry for a decade at least and there are hundreds of thousands of things you can do, classes you can take, treatments you can have, etc. to supplement your journey to "HAPPY AND HEALTHY".

But there is only one thing that matters.

Disclaimer: Yes, I would still suggest Yoga, Massage, and Meditation on your journey to changing this one thing but just keep reading.

How Consistency Affects Jiu Jitsu Practitioners

Jiu jitsu creates a vehicle for success through personal ownership and a growth mindset. To achieve skill in jiu jitsu, one must stop making the same mistakes and instead grow to create new answers for problems that had once been impossible. This concept of self-reflection, followed by redirection and the will to do better, will carry over easily from inside to outside the dojo.

Daily Vacations

“Work work work work work work…” We all know those people that willingly admit that Rihanna’s hit “Work” is … “like totally their theme song”.

  1.  I am that person, and that is a direct quote from me.
  2. If you haven’t listened to that song you should. It is most likely offensive to some of you, and just awful to others, but then it can be stuck in both of our heads.

Either way, lyrically, "Work" is "about working for a paycheck no matter what else is going on in your life. Additionally, it focuses on "a fragile relationship" which seems to be a common factor when our work life and our personal life are out of balance.

Whether hip hop is your scene or not, I think most of us can relate to the fact of work being unenjoyable.

Even if you are lucky enough to own your own business, be self-employed, or have your dream job, work can still consume you.  It can consume the majority of your time and thoughts.
